God's Sovereign Hand
Israel
[1096–586 b.c.]
We now come to the time period in history where
we begin to see God actively working specifically
with His chosen people, the nation of Israel. Israel
is a fascinating civilization to compare and contrast
to other nations because we know so much about
how exactly God was working with them. By 1400
B.C., God had brought the ancient Israelites out of
Egypt and into the Promised Land of Canaan. After
Joshua’s successful conquest of the land, the people
lived in their 12 tribes for several hundred years,
somewhat united, and governed by various judges
whom God equipped throughout the years. Yet they
were never unified under the dominion of a single
human ruler until Saul was anointed King in 1096
B.C., and the Jewish nation did not flourish (with
wealth and power) until the time of King David and
his son Solomon.
The golden age of Israel arose under King Solomon
(1016–976 B.C.), during which time he built the
magnificent temple of God in Jerusalem, as well as
an incredible royal house for himself. There was
nothing that could compare to these structures
during their time. The wealth and splendor of
Solomon and his kingdom were unrivaled — silver
was not even considered valuable in his days, it
was “as common as stones” (1 Kings 10:21, 27). His
wisdom and provision of justice for his people was
famous. “All the earth was seeking the presence of
Solomon, to hear his wisdom which God had put in
his heart” (1 Kings 10:24).
The dedication of the temple was perhaps the
highest point in Israel’s history. “Never again do we
find the nation, as a whole, living in such peace and
prosperity and apparently so completely devoted
to the Lord. Both king and people were united in
obedience to the law of God.”1 It is an important
observation to make because even this nation,
chosen by God and established specifically to
